There’s always something to do in The H! Check out my curated event list for Black Professionals in Houston this week.

The West African Film Festival will present films that are either from the region, by West African artists, or are about the life and culture of West Africa. They will screen films that provide insight into the complexity and diversity of the region and that give the viewer realistic perspectives on the people, culture, art, history, and politics. 2. BAD LOVE: A DARK VALENTINE’S EVE READING & OPEN MIC
Tuesday, February 13, 2018, 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Love is not always roses and chocolates. Sometimes love is dark; sometimes it’s a punch in the gut; and sometimes it’s just laugh-out-loud ridiculous. They’ll feature three special guest readers, Jasminne Mendez, Chelsey Clammer, and Adrienne Perry, and will then open the stage to any and all Houston writers and poets for an open mic session. Bring your fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and everything in-between! Learn more HERE.

Dutchman, written by award-winning playwright, poet, jazz critic, and activist, Amiri Baraka (Leroi Jones), is a two-character confrontation on a New York subway between a middle class sharply dressed Black intellectual (Clay) and a sensuous, flirtatious, a bit older, white woman. 4. BLACK PANTHER OPENING WEEKEND!
Thursday, February 15, 2018 – Sunday, February 18, 2018
There are screenings happening throughout the city but even if you get to see it for free I hope you’ll buy a ticket just to support. Chadwick Boseman stars as the Black Panther, who springs into action when an old enemy threatens the fate of his nation and the world. Presale tickets were originally sold out but they released more! I saw it last night; this movie is fantastic and you don’t have to be a Marvel or comic book fan to enjoy it. Learn more HERE.
